As always very nice miniatures, though the facial details were a bit vague on the half orc & enjoyable to paint. Admittedly a somewhat eclectic choice of subjects, but thats the joy of this project - not having to paint set units to satisfy the tyranny of army lists & oobs. Until next time HGA.
More of this later but for now here are a few Otherworld Miniatures that have made it of the Table of Doom.
These guys have all been great fun to paint; the toad is inspired by one I found under a pile of logs at work a few weeks back so the colour scheme is quite authentic, though the real one did do quite a long piss on my hand when I moved him. The player characters were an interesting experiment, experience with hurricane lamps as a youngster suggest that their sources of illumination might be highlighting themselves as targets rather than revealing potential enemies, food for thought GM's it might be time to re-consider how powerful infra-vision is in old school rpg's.

Citadel released these miniatures in conjunction with the 'Shrine of Rigg' scenario published in the 1984 Compendium ( which number it was eludes me at present). The scenario was set in the jungle lands of Lustria & featured a group of Norse adventurers attacking an Amazon Shrine, it was designed to be played through using Warhammer Fantasy Battle rules but in common with the earlier material Citadel presented for this system was more of a skirmish/rpg than a tabletop battle. With a quick re-write I'm sure this could be updated to Otherworld's Fantasy Skirmish rules or possibly Frostgrave, though the weather might be somewhat better.
I've got couple more Amazons prepped ready for painting so they will feature here in due course. Having fun re-visiting these older miniatures, they are perhaps lacking in fine detail compared to some of the higher end stuff available today, but they are a lot easier & quicker to paint. They also seem a lot more robust, down to the higher lead content no doubt, really pays to wash your hands after handling these babies in the raw.
C33 were the "Adventure Packs" featuring a miniature on foot & mounted, this chap came with a seated version of himself on a flying carpet, which sadly I swapped away in my youth. The next project is to try & recreate said carpet.

The demon idol diorama is based loosely on the art decorating the AD&D 1st Edition Players Handbook & depicts a group of player characters & their henchmen looting the shrine of some nameless demon god; the original artwork featured rather more prosaic orangey/ red flames but I wanted to try something a little more showy!

In the spirit of the original I've popped a couple of extra characters in there, the hooded assassin is another Otherworld miniature whilst the puzzled looking mage is an old Citadel Miniatures wizard from the same era as the aforementioned players handbook.
The resin base is another old piece produced by Torchlight.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-8459582709267816032015-12-20T04:10:00.001-08:002015-12-20T04:10:24.092-08:00Another C23 Giant Ogre.Whilst looking for something completely un-related in my games storage earlier this week I came across the remainder of my old ( circa 1987) Citadel Miniatures Giant Ogres. Some were moderately well painted with oil paints sometime in the 90's when I was at Polytechnic; but a few like the one below were finished in Pelikan Plaka and looked, well, shite.
As part of a now ongoing mission to lend them some of the dignity they deserve they are getting a repaint.
According to my old Citadel catalogue this miniature is an Ogre Mercenary:

A few small points of detail to finish off, but overall fairly happy with how this one turned out. At the time I thought these were great, but nowadays the aesthetic of this era of Citadel Miniatures doesn't appeal to me so much. Compared to the earlier sculpts their stuff was starting to get too grotesque & cartoonish, particularly the Humanoid & Chaos stuff, however as an exercise in nostalgia this really takes me back to an era of playing WFB 2nd Edition on various kitchen tables and painting miniatures when I was supposed to be doing homework. This may explain why I cut down trees & dig holes for a living.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-86028174750452869392015-12-06T04:17:00.000-08:002015-12-06T04:17:12.769-08:00C23 Giant Ogre.Another old gem from Citadel Miniatures currently getting the makeover treatment:
This I believe is an Oriental Ogre and he does look the part. Definitely getting a starring role in my upcoming fantasy central asian roleplaying campaign which I'm just polishing off; been busy doing the isometric maps this week. Not something I've attempted before but having a blast!
The two with horned helmets came with the War Rhino Captive Carrier ( which will also get a freshen up at some point), the standard bearer came in the same blister pack as the kettle drummer above & the bolt thrower should have a loader figure with it which I have based up singly as part of an earlier project.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-77059713509635591812015-09-23T12:14:00.002-07:002015-09-23T12:14:33.998-07:00Blog 100. Rather a great miniature for my 100th post on this blog, featuring the eclectic equipment so characteristic of Andrew Chernak's skeletons. Interesting to note that this miniature consists of two castings, rider & steed. Compare this to the 4 or 5 parts required to assemble the skeletons in the Barrowmaze boxed set I tackled earlier in the year for not a lot of extra detail & a definite lack of robustness for gaming use.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-76565544440976195882015-08-30T04:42:00.001-07:002015-08-30T04:42:31.400-07:00A Barrow Wight from The Barrowmaze. The final miniature from my Barrowmaze order courtesy of Otherworld Miniatures:

Another cool sculpt, but again really fiddly to assemble with separate arms & a separate shield. I've only got two miniatures left to paint out of this boxed set, the intriguingly titled Fossil Skeletons. These will follow in due course when my horrible eye infection has cleared up.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-37482217712345263782015-06-08T12:40:00.002-07:002015-06-08T12:40:34.053-07:00Bitten by the Writing Bug.It had to happen sooner or later, after a year of not doing anything vaguely concrete following up on a one off game of D&D 5th I finally had an idea worth expanding upon. It is amazing where the mind can drift off to whilst digging holes ( one of the worlds most mind numbing tasks), this time I was pondering on early archaeology in Chinese Central Asia when it occurred to me that an Oasis town on a trade route would make a suitable environment for a range of different roleplaying scenarios. What has developed over the last couple of weeks is Lop Nor ( not an original name I know, but it sounds right ) a sandbox setting that I'm starting to fill out in a little more detail; here's a taster of progress so far:

A rough outline of the setting, excuse the hammy intro at the top.

The Stench Gate, downwind of the shambles district it lives up to its name.

The more salubrious Grass Gate.

I have it in mind to run this setting using Craig Cartmells Deadsimple RPG rules, to which end I have put together a suitable character sheet:

This is still very much a work in progress but I do have a small group of players interested in giving it a go once the long winter evenings set in. At the moment I don't intend to mess around with any 'story arcs' malarkey, I'll just drop the players in & see where they run with it.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-31901575667090092172015-05-31T03:11:00.002-07:002015-05-31T03:11:33.650-07:00More Otherworld Miniatures. The Crypt Knight. Not being familiar with the Labyrinth Lord set of rules I'm not sure how the Crypt Knight would be represented in old money; another very nice miniature though:

Being as how he represents a knight I have tried to represent some faded splendour; the shield has come out alright, but the once yellow cloak does more closely resemble hessian sacking, but then I expect crypts are pretty hard on clothing.

Most of the undead I paint are finished with Vallejo Panzer Colour acrylics, I find the wide variety of woody & earthy tones work well with the subject, better than trying to muddy down brighter colours & a lot less effort to boot.

Another batch of very good miniatures from Otherworld. The animation of the skeleton is particularly good, very reminiscent of his brethren in 'Jason & the Argonauts'. The only downside is having to glue four separate pieces together, holding those tiny arms in place while 5 minute epoxy dries feels like a task Sissiphus would have baulked at.

Finally in anticipation of the July release of 'Frostgrave' a panoramic shot of the board I intend to game this on. I say intend because unless I can get a couple of my colleagues at the local boardgames club to participate, the chances of this project ever taking flight are minimal. This as ever is simply down to time, I just never seem to have enough of it. I really do see the appeal of Frostgrave having enjoyed in my younger days both Mordheim & Necromunda, GW games in a similar vein where you begin with a small retinue of characters & improve them over the span of a campaign. Indeed Necromunda got played almost to death over the space of a couple of months in my earlier feckless years, still got the much converted miniatures ( bits were added every time a character bought or found an upgrade of some sort) & my gang sheet buried in storage somewhere, sold the boxed set for what seemed a ridiculous sum of money when I last moved house along with a lot of other gaming stuff that hadn't seen light of day for some time. Didn't have the space & really needed the money for more important stuff.
Nicely animated sculpt this one but coming in six separate pieces it ought to be. I might just add it was a complete pain in the arse to assemble, but at least there was enough metal to be able to drill & pin. This is definitely not the case with the skeletons I've just started on, hope & superglue are going to have to suffice!Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-465457089227723162015-05-03T06:31:00.001-07:002015-05-03T06:31:41.854-07:00Barrow Guardian & Tomb Robbers.Three more Otherworld Miniatures representing denizens of the Barrowmaze Mega-dungeon.
I could have gone for a more standard grey cloud to represent this animated statue, but I wanted to try something different. The intention was to attempt a nice red sandstone but it has come out more like rusty iron instead, nevertheless I like the effect & he will make a good stand in for an Iron Golem.
Must say I particularly enjoyed painting the Mummy Lord, the contrast of his finery & otherwise rather ragged appearance is very pleasing.
Have already started assembling a few of the multi piece castings from the set & as anticipated they are turning out to be a pain in the arse, I generally like to pin miniatures together but a lot of the parts included are too fine for this to be practical. Instead I have had to use super-glue, which is fine to a degree but doesn't always hold together well in the long term; at least in my experience. Will just have to be careful handling them.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-49740647227775264712015-04-12T03:23:00.001-07:002015-04-12T03:23:22.265-07:00Otherworld Miniatures Barrowmaze Zombies. My first fantasy miniatures for quite some time, starting with the single piece castings from the Barrowmaze boxed set:
Really nicely done miniatures these & as can be seen from the comparison shot suitably emaciated. I've decided to paint all the single piece castings from this set first as I need a bit of time to experiment with various glues for assembling the multipart castings. Some of these I will pin & glue but some of the finer castings like the skeletons might require a different approach as there is very little to pin into, time to invest in some good epoxy I reckon.

This was ordered for my birthday back in January so it has been a seven week wait to get it, but in defence of Otherworld death laid his hand on the shoulder of their casting contractor, so in the great scheme of things having to wait a few weeks for a hobby item isn't terribly important.

Anyway, inside this splendidly decorated box are the following:
The general quality of the castings is excellent with very little in the way of flash & only minimal mould lines, really looking forward to getting some paint on these.
One of these days I may even get round to running Greg Gillespie's excellent Barrowmaze, his take on the Mega Dungeon trope. I really like the consistency of the theme with plenty of undead & vermin involved. Several of the undead types encountered are subtly different from their D&D ancestors, for instance Fossil skeletons are covered in limestone accretions which make them harder to damage than usual; while Sapphire skeletons reanimate a few rounds after 'death' unless the jewel in their skull is destroyed.
Not that this is likely to happen anytime soon however, work is still far to busy to devote much time to gaming ( though I am currently a player in a monthly Firefly RPG campaign) but at least if & when I finally retire I won't be short of stuff to do.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-58589299262956609942014-07-20T03:52:00.000-07:002014-07-20T03:52:17.348-07:00Normal Service Resumed.I hadn't realized just how long it is since I last posted anything here. Work & house repairs have seriously been eating into my leisure time ( which is limited at the best of times) plus the latest plan to get my dungeon stuff into circulation went badly tits up. So in a huff I stuffed it into a large box & promptly forgot about it for a few months.

I have however decided to get back on that particular horse & have produced a master & mould for a new piece:

A classically decorated room created with the help of hot water, a litre bottle of gin & some strong elastic bands ( sounds like a honey trap for 1980s conservative politicians).
Its a nice change from carving stonework from sheets of balsa foam, the dust of which is like itching powder & now I've got the masters done for the straight walls I can begin to put together some corridor sections with the same pillar detail for those more aspirational dungeon environments.

In other news I've bought my first D&D product after an interlude of 32 years.

I wasn't initially that interested but there was a fair bit of enthusiasm for it with my local board gaming group so in a fit of madness I agreed to DM a session for a few of the other members. There are actually two of us D.M ing on consecutive weekends, it will be interesting to compare notes afterwards to see how the two groups get on. The default setting seems to be The Forgotten Realms, at least that is where the introductory mini campaign in the starter box is set; but I'm going down a different route with my own setting & scenario. Not that I've anything against the official game settings produced down the years, i'm sure they are very good, its just easier for me to remember details of stuff made up in my own head rather than trying to cope with pages of detail written by someone else.

Anyway, for £12 its a very nice little set:

The starter rulebook gives you all the basic mechanics of the game, movement, fighting, magic etc but doesn't cover character generation; however there are five pre-generated characters included in the box or you can download a basic rules pdf from Wizards of the Coast's website. The starter campaign is nicely done, though a bit of a dead loss to me, but even this is redeemed by having a short bestiary in the back of the book featuring amongst others goblins, orcs, giant spiders & four types of undead. Even the dice included are fairly decent, certainly a vast improvement over the light blue ones included in the Moldvay Basic set I bought back in 1983.

There is quite a lot that appeals to me in this iteration of the rules, I like the advantage/disadvantage mechanic whereby you roll 2 d20s & use the lowest or highest number depending on your circumstance. The character sheet is recognisably D&D, anyone who had played BECM or AD&D 1st edition would be able to pick it up & understand it straight away. I also like the fact they've included a skills section on it, each skill being modified by one of your six characteristics. Its a subtle jog to the players memory that they possess attributes other than combat skills & magic.
They've even made magic users a viable class at low level through the addition of use at will 'cantrips', 0 level spells with unlimited daily use, so no more cast one spell & then throw daggers or keep out of the way for the rest of the gaming day. My only reservation is that the balance might have swung the other way a bit, but magic users still only use d6 for hit points & have very limited access to protection so they still have to keep out of the way when the swords start swinging.

Looking forward to running this, probably have more considered thoughts post the event. Just have to see how my group of four players cope with " The Fane of the Drowned God".Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-18690532251193894132014-03-15T11:44:00.001-07:002014-03-15T11:44:36.901-07:00Some Concrete Progress on the Retro Dungeon. At long last it seems that my modern take on the original Torchlight Fantasy Products dungeon scenery could be be made commercially available. I had a brief conversation yesterday with the chap who has been producing the silicon rubber moulds for me & it turns out he is interested in producing a line of fantasy scenery, including rather fortuitously some classic dungeon terrain. Long story short, instead of starting from scratch or going down the Hirst Arts route he would prefer to produce the items from the masters I have already produced.
This from my point of view is brilliant news, having got the project to a stage where I could have started casting items & selling them I had hit the proverbial brick wall. The main problem for me was lack of time, due to already having a very full work load running my own company & to a lesser extent lacking the I.T. skills to have the confidence to set up an internet shop front to sell the product.
So it seems in one chance conversation things could be full steam ahead in bringing the Retro Dungeon project to a satisfactory conclusion.
We have yet to hammer out the final details but its more than likely that we will crowdfund the project, which should go smoothly given that the masters, moulds, casting & retail infrastructure are already in place. Its just a case of settling the financial situation to both parties satisfaction and then its just the litmus test of the buying publics interest to pass!

Just as a reminder of what the project looks like here are a few shots of an adventuring party taking on a recently produced mega-dungeon represented with my stuff & some original Torchlight product.
Modern & Classic.Carrying on my recent theme of painting RAFM Call of Cthulhu monsters I give you the Cthonian.

I still need to finesse the highlighting a bit & put it on a base, but its almost there.

As a contrast here is Grenadier Models rendering of the same theme from 1983:

The two together:

I'm hard pressed to say which of the two sculpts I prefer; the animation of the modern version is very good, but its a bit too Hollywood whereas the flaccid pose of the earlier sculpt somehow more sinister. I've stuck to the colour scheme shown in Chaosiums 'Field Guide to Cthulhu Monsters' rather than going with the current fashion for flesh coloured or purple tentacles popularised by Fantasy Flight Games, this is after all a 'Retro' dungeon.Handgrenadealienhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16616013296799287812noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1135702544218457842.post-66577435963791330082014-02-01T12:18:00.002-08:002014-02-01T12:18:47.824-08:00Chaugnar Faugn & A Yithian.More results from my current enthusiasm for all things Lovecraftian, though strictly speaking Chaugnar Faugn is a creation of Frank Belknap Long:
